Inertia

I got out for a 3-mile run this afternoon.  It sucked. (My leg injuries were fine...just lack of conditioning). It was my first run in 11 days.  That's a big part of why it sucked.

I'm caught in a trap right now.  Running is a lot harder for me right now than it was in my glory days of 2009-2011.  Therefore it's less fun, and so it's easier to find an excuse not to go.

Too much work.  It's icy out there.  I don't feel well.  I didn't sleep well enough.

They're all true.  But I can't make all these excuses all the time.  I must run more.  As I get in better shape, it won't be so unpleasant and I won't dread it so much.

I can recognize the trap I'm in.  I know exactly what I have to do and what I need my mindset to be.  I'm just having trouble freeing myself.  There's no magic motivation switch I flip back on.

Could today be that start?  I made excuses all week.  I woke up to a freezing drizzle this morning, went and got breakfast, and settled in for a lazy by myself.  (Chris is in Wisconsin on her own adventure).  I ate my breakfast sandwich and donuts.  I watched two episodes of Game of Thrones. I resigned myself to running tomorrow, and flipped on the Flyers game, and took a nice three-cat-assisted nap during the second period.

(I swear that cats must radiate some kind of sleepiness drug into the air.)

But THEN I went out and ran.

I'm going to be sore tomorrow, but between a really tough day of work on Monday and picking Chris up from the airport that night, I know I won't run on Monday.  So I'm going to try 2 miles tomorrow morning and get myself out of the bear trap.

Catching Up...Sort Of

It's been a pretty mediocre week of running, but worse week of blogging.  Actually, it's been a slightly less than mediocre two weeks of running.

After the Sole of the City 10K, I didn't run again until Thursday for all of the lame reasons I detailed in my last post.  But I sort of made up for it on that Saturday when I ran 5 miles in 41:55, which I think is one of the fastest 5-miles I've ever run.  (I was a little faster at the TowneBank Shamrock 8K in March, and my time at the 8K mark at the Hershey 10K was under 41 minutes if those km markers were to be believed)

I ran again on Monday (5 miles again.  I'm in sort of a rut, lately), but then not again until Saturday.  It was warm and humid this week, and I hate that, but I still need to get out there. (I'm glad I'm not in the Broad Street Run this year, it was in the 80s at 8am when I ran it in 2010, and I think it'll be just as warm this year.)  I just don't seem to have much motivation these days.

I was planning on trying 6 or 7 yesterday, but I found that I just was completely un-acclimated to a 67 degree morning with 90-percent humidity.  It probably didn't help that my legs were tired from Friday night's gym class (that's another post, though.) and that I wore the adiZero Tempos for the first time since the Hershey 10K because they're more ventilated than the Adrenalines and I thought they'd be cooler.  They were, but I think I just like the support and stability of the Brooks more.  I'll probably wear them for the HACC Dash 5K next Sunday, because I ran my second-fastest 5K ever there last year, so it's a race I have a shot at a PR at, in theory.  I don't think I'm in PR shape, but I should have a much better week of running this week, and I think that will help.

So...Yeah...Hi

It's been a little quiet around here again, I realize.  Maybe that's because I'm a lazy ne'er-do-well who hasn't run since Saturday's Sole of the City 10K.

It wasn't for lack of effort.  Well, ok, it was mostly for lack of effort.  I was going to run on Monday, but it was cold and rainy.  I like the cold, of course, but I just can't psyche myself up for cold and rainy.  Tuesday was very rainy...at least I think that was my excuse, and on Wednesday (last night) we ran some errands and I was going to go out after the Orioles game, when it was cool and clear and beautiful, but I was tired.

I should have gone out last night.  Instead, I went out ran 5 miles tonight at a decent pace, but was punished for idle-otry with massive humidity and tired, sore legs.  I don't think I was properly hydrated, and I blame the tired, sore legs more on that and my over-resting and a too-fast first two miles, but apparently the Brooks Adrenaline isn't quite the cure-all that it seemed to be last week.  Still, even though I really seem to be faster than in Tempos, the Adrenalines seem to be winning the shoe war.

I need to get a little more consistent; I seem to be stuck in a rut of really good week followed by a low-motivation week.
